Rev. Cecil Jacob Fitzgerald Thompson

Biography

Rev. Cecil J. Fitzgerald Thompson is presently a Licensed Local Pastor in the West Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church and a candidate for the ministry of Ordained Elder. Prior to his first appointment in 2016, Rev. Thompson was a member at Christ United Methodist Church in Columbus, Ohio where he served under the leadership of the Rev. Dr. Calvin Alston, Jr. In 2016, Pastor Thompson was appointed to serve as the Pastor of Gethsemane United Methodist Church in Columbus, Ohio where he served for two years.

Pastor Thompson is originally from Sierra Leone in West Africa. He was born into a Methodist family, but later became a member of the Pentecostal Church as a teenager. He was nurtured in a tradition of deep faith and learned what it truly means to lean on God’s unchanging hand, experience Jesus’ unfailing love, and to surrender daily to the power of the Holy Spirit. In those teen years, Pastor Thompson experienced God’s call to pastoral ministry. He became a “boy preacher,” Scripture Union President, and a Student Assistant to the School Chaplain while in high school. In later years, he returned to his roots in the Methodist tradition and its profound call to God’s boundless grace.

Thompson lives in Westerville, Ohio with his lovely wife, Kim Anderson-Thompson. Kim is a human resources professional who worked in the field of HR for 13 years. She grew up and attended school in Detroit, Michigan. Kim’s hobbies include reading and writing, and other creative pursuits. She enjoys taking long nature walks in all seasons. While the couple does not have kids of their own, they are kept busy by nieces and nephews. Pastor Thompson and his wife see their relationship as a testament to God’s abiding love. Pastor Thompson’s parents and six siblings (four girls and two boys) are spread across three states: Michigan, Texas, and Maryland.

At the undergraduate level, Pastor Thompson received the Bachelor of Arts degree (B.A.) with a major in English Honors and a Co-major in University Honors from Wayne State University, Detroit, MI (1999). He also was awarded the Certificate of Academic Excellence in English Honors and the Certificate of Academic Achievement. Pastor Thompson also holds a Juris Doctorate (J.D., Law) from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law (2003). Moreover, he is a 2018 graduate of the Master of Divinity (M.Div.) program at the Methodist Theological School in Ohio (MTSO) Delaware, Ohio. He was also awarded the Ronald L. Williams 2018 Book Prize in Theology and Ethics. Additionally, he was chosen by the MTSO faculty as the school’s 2018 preacher for its Baccalaureate Service.

As a candidate for the ministry of Ordained Elder in the United Methodist Church, Pastor Thompson will be seeking to be commissioned in 2019. At that time, he will become a Provisional Elder in the UMC’s West Ohio Conference.

Following the example of Jesus, Pastor Thompson is a relationship-builder. He enjoys building relationships in a variety of contexts—in the Body of Christ, in the wider community, and among strangers. Pastor Thompson believes that Christian hospitality (connecting through relationships) is a core value of the kingdom of God. One of his favorite books is Christine D. Pohl’s Making Room: Recovering Hospitality as a Christian Tradition. She writes, “Jesus challenges narrow definitions and dimensions of hospitality and presses them outward.” Pohl reminds us of the great importance of Jesus’ concern for the “least of these” in Matthew 25. For Pastor Thompson, sharing the joys of Christian fellowship is possible when we go beyond limits.
